ARTISANAL GOLD KENYA (A G K ) is an umbrella organization that regulates, controls and work directly with Small-scale Gold Mining community of Migori and Kakamega counties near Lake Victoria in western Kenya. ARTISANAL GOLD KENYA aimed at resolving common abuses and challenges faced by the mining community when selling the gold they mined, especially when dealing with middle men. We focused on exploring accessibility into the gold market globally with a common approach to pricing, and transparency. Our ultimate goal is to improve the miners’ socio-economic welfare by increasing their financial returns leading to poverty reduction and development.
Our experience team work with miners, government, and industry in the areas of business, sustainable development, social responsibility, governance, environment, health, geology, Geo-spatial analysis and the gold markets.
The Kenyan government supports artisanal gold mining through policies like the Mining Act (2016), which recognizes the sector's importance, and by formalizing the sector, providing capacity building, and establishing cooperatives to facilitate access to markets and funding
Revenue Sharing
A portion of gold revenue is allocated to communities with gold deposits and to counties annual budgets. 20% will be given back to the community whose land has gold deposits (artisanal gold miners) and 10% will be used to fund the county annual budget. The other 70% will be shared between the investor and the national government on a 50% and 20% basis,
Community brief
Encouraged by the government, the Artisan Gold Mining Cooperative, located in Migori, Kakamega and vihiga counties in kENYA, was established in 2021. Led by Mr. Leonard Muguru, the cooperative management committee consists of 9 members (1 woman and 8 males). They started the excavation of a horizontal shaft in the formal land in a mining area called Nyatike and Kuria West, in 2017. Most of the cooperative members were already in the mining business and although most of the members had known each other for a long time, it wasn't until 2021 that they encouraged to form a cooperative, thanks to technical assistance from AGK. These cooperative has solid experience in mining, good leadership from the president, a good relational portfolio and good knowledge of the mining sector. That’s why this cooperative is attracted to investment opportunity, and ARTISANAL GOLD KENYA (A G K ). is cooperating with this mining partnership.
Establishing a mercury-free processing plant
Since 2023, the AGK has been piloting two mercury-free processing systems (MFPS) in Kenya to prevent mercury usage, increase gold recovery of hard-rock gold ore processing, implement international standards on responsible ASM (ensure transparency of gold origin), and promote formalized operations. AGC decided to support and improve the cooperative activities by installing the MFPS. This processing plant was installed to benefit the local mining community and is now working to establish basic infrastructure for the MFPS, including buildings, equipment, water, and power supply. As part of the deployment of the mercury-free ore processing unit on the artisanal mining site, Artisanal Gold Kenya has initiated a training session for local machine operators recruited from the mining community to manage the ore processing equipment installed for this purpose.
